Since 1950 plastics became the materials of greatest world production. Thus, in recent years the increase in the use of different types of plastics has been a matter of global concern due to the depletion of fossil fuels and the accumulation of waste in the different environmental matrices, affecting the ecosystem. By 2015, 4.9 million metric tons of plastic waste were recorded in landfills, because more than 40% of the plastics produced are designed for single use. The mass amount of plastic is estimated to exceed 450 million tonnes per year and will double by 2045.Due to the great problem of plastics and their threats to the ecosystem, the researchers worked on a large number of technologies to mitigate the effect of plastics on the different environmental matrices. Therefore, the main goal of this manuscript is summarizes on the plastics more used as well as the most common techniques to reduce their presence at the environment.

PS by SAS process using ethyl acetate as solvent and SC-CO 2 as antisolvent and obtained two groups of nearly spherical sub-microns particles with a particle size between 150 and 400 nm. The results demonstrated that it is feasible to acquire PS particles by SAS process, but the PS PM2.5 standard particles have not been prepared. The Box-Behnken design-response surface method (BBD-RSM) is a second-order experimental design method based on three levels. It can evaluate the non-linear relationship between indexes and factors to optimize the operating conditions for responses affected by multiple variables 24,25. The objective of this research is to optimize the conditions for preparing PS PM2.5 particles by SAS process based on BBD-RSM. Toluene was selected as a solvent and SC-CO 2 was used as an antisolvent. Further more, the effects of crystallizer pressure, PS massic concentration, flow ratio of CO 2 /solution and crystallizer temperature on the morphology, the size and distribution of the PS particles were investigated systematically by BBD-RSM. Materials and methods Materials. Carbon dioxide, with purity of 98%, was purchased from Jinan German Foreign Specialty Gases Co., Ltd, China. Polystyrene, with purity of 99.9%, was provided by Tianjin Damao Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd, China. Toluene, with purity of 98%, was purchased from Jinan Xinwang Chemical Co., Ltd, China.

This study evaluated the thermal, morphological, chemical, and mechanical properties of virgin and recycled polystyrene. The recycling process was carried out by dissolution of polystyrene (extruded and crystal) in ethyl acetate, followed by two processes for solvent removal: vaporization by direct contact with water at 85 °C in a tubular evaporator and vaporization during the extrusion process. For the samples produced by solvent evaporation in the tubular evaporator, there was practically no degradation on polymer chain, neither reduction in glass transition temperature. For the samples produced by solvent evaporation during the extrusion, a polymer chain degradation was noted by reduction in molar weight and in glass transition temperature. The FTIR evaluation suggests that polymer oxidative degradation, in both samples, was more pronounced in the extruded sample. The removal of plasticizing additives could be evidenced by the glass transition temperature increase in the recycled samples produced in the tubular evaporator. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J.
