Polystyrene: A Self-Dispersing, Ultralow Loading Additive for Improving the Breakdown Strength of Polypropylene for High Voltage Power Cable Applications

Abstract: Voltage stabilizers (VSs) with benzene derivatives have received great interest as high-performance additives for improving the electrical durability of polypropylene (PP)-based insulation materials for high voltage (HV) power cable applications. In this work, atactic polystyrene (aPS) was first used as a thermoplastic VS (TVS) to efficiently dope the benzene units into isotactic PP (iPP). The aPS TVS was incorporated in the iPP matrix through melt-mixing, and the domain size of immiscible aPS decreased with t… Show more

“…The results show that the PP/Ac-SEBS blend have both higher AC and DC breakdown strength than that of PP/SEBS blend. Lee et al chose atactic polystyrene (aPS) as a thermoplastic macromolecule voltage stabiliser [103]. It is found that the smaller amount of aPS doping can significantly increase the breakdown strength of iPP, even at ultralow loading levels below 0.01 phr, which shows obviously higher action efficiency than directly adding small molecule voltage stabilisers.…”

“…These radicals 2 of 18 create cross-links and a network structure in the polymer [1]. XLPE is used as an electrical insulating material due to its hydrolysis resistance, high insulation properties, abrasion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties [2][3][4][5][6]. In addition, it is used in piping systems for chemical storage, in heating and cooling systems, etc., due to its high extrusion speed and low cost.…”
