Polysiphonia ulleungensis sp. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta): a new diminutive species from Korea belonging to Polysiphonia sensu stricto

Abstract: Polysiphonia sensu stricto is characterized by having 4 ecorticate pericentral cells, rhizoids in open connection with the pericentral cells, four-celled carpogonial branches, spermatangial branches replacing the whole trichoblast, and tetrasporangia arranged in straight series. Polysiphonia ulleungensis sp. nov. is newly described from Sadongri, Ulleung Island, Korea, based on morphological and molecular evidence. It is mainly characterized by having ecorticate axes with 4 pericentral cells, apical cells tran… Show more

“…Recently, several new species have been reported from Korea after molecular analyses were conducted as evidence for a species level designation: Polysiphonia ulluengensis, P. dokdoensis, P. amplacapilli B. Kim (Bustamante et al, 2014a(Bustamante et al, , 2014bKim & Kim, 2014). Here, we reassessed the diversity of Polysiphonia from Korea to include two new species, namely, P. freshwateri sp.…”

“…A recent study of the closely related species Melanothamnus japonica (Harvey) Díaz-Tapia and Maggs, M. The rbcL-3P divergence between the Caribbean Panama M. pseudovillum and Punta Burica Melanothamnus sp. was 2.0%, which is generally considered to represent the low end of interspecific divergence values for Polysiphonia sensu lato species e.g., [96][97][98]. COI-5P divergence values in red algae are generally greater than those for rbcL in complementary comparisons e.g., [99,100].…”
