Building materials derived from agricultural and industrial waste are becoming more attractive in the civil engineering and architectural applications because of their sustainability and lower environmental impact. In addition, substantial value can be added to the wastes by producing value added products from them. Therefore, four different types of locally available by-products (rice husk, wheat husk, wood fibers and textile waste fibers) were used to produce composites with a biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/poly(lactic acid)(PBAT/PLA) blend binder by hot pressing. The morphological analysis of the composites revealed that the PBAT/PLA binder had more affinity with wood and textile fibers than with wheat and rice husks. The prepared composites showed thermal stability until 250 °C. All the prepared biodegradable composites exhibited good compressive strength (11-40 MPa) and flexural strength (0.80-2.25 MPa). The observed mechanical properties allow easy handling without risk of breaking them when positioned in the buildings. The biodegradable composites were characterized for their thermal conductivity, diffusivity, effusivity and heat capacity. The density and thermal conductivity of the produced composite was in the range of 378-488 kg/m 3 and 0.08-0.14 W/m.K, respectively. The least thermal conductivity i.e. 0.08 W/m.K was observed for the rice husk composite with a density of 378 kg/m 3. A minimum water absorption (42%) was found in the rice husk composites after 24 h immersion in water. The composite samples were still cohesive after 24 h immersion in the water because of the water resistance nature of the binder. The prepared biodegradable composites meet most of the required properties for the indoor building insulation applications and show great potential to replace the conventional building material in current use.

Lightweight eco-materials are in high demand in many sectors, such as aerospace, industry, and building due to their several characteristics. The present paper is an experimental investigation of the thermal characteristics of novel sandwich panels made with local and ecological materials namely agglomerated cork for the core and bio-composite materials for the skin. Three configurations (symmetric, asymmetric, and two layers) were studied with different cork core thicknesses. Density values have been measured and compared. Thermal characterization consists of determining thermal conductivity and specific heat using a HFM apparatus; whilst thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity have been calculated using the experimental findings. The panels are lightweight and thermally insulating. The values of thermal conductivity are in the range 0.071 and 0.102 W.m−1.K−1. The comparison between experimental results of thermal conductivity to theoretical values highlights the accuracy of method for multi-layer thermal characterization and the good adhesion between layers. Finally, a life cycle assessment of the new sandwich panels has been carried out and compared with common insulation materials. The sandwich panels are efficient in terms of embodied energy and CO2 emissions compared to commercialized insulators and some insulators based on recycled or natural materials, the embodied energy for symmetric configuration with 4 cm cork core are 79.73, 94.75, and 89.35 MJ/FU corresponding to an embodied carbon 5.33, 6.32, and 6.01 CO2/FU respectively. They can be classified in the middle between synthetic and natural insulators. Based on the findings, it was concluded that utilizing these sandwich panels as construction materials for interior paneling or partition walls could offer benefits in terms of being environmentally sustainable and cost-efficient.

Visando o desenvolvimento de tecnologias de adaptação e mitigação dos efeitos do aumento de temperatura no setor da construção civil, de modo a promover melhor desempenho térmico-mecânico, esse estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a influência da porosidade na condutividade térmica do concreto permeável, avaliando sua resistência mecânica e coeficiente de permeabilidade. O concreto permeável foi dosado pelo método de Nguyen et al. (2014) com índices de vazios de 15, 20, 25 e 30%. Determinou-se o coeficiente de permeabilidade, a resistência a compressão e a tração na flexão pelas normas técnicas brasileiras e sua massa específica, porosidade total e condutividade térmica pelas normas internacionais. A análise estatística dos resultados mostrou que somente a resistência à tração na flexão não apresenta diferença significativa com a variação da porosidade. A porosidade total do concreto permeável foi de 23,1, 28,9, 33,3 e 34,0%, respectivamente aos índices de vazios utilizados como parâmetro de entrada no método de dosagem de 15, 20, 25 e 30%, cujas massas específicas variaram, respectivamente, de 2153 a 1857 kg.m-3. Os dois traços de menores porosidades atingiram resistência a compressão acima de 20 MPa, e a resistência a tração na flexão dos quatro traços ficou acima de 4,0 MPa. O coeficiente de permeabilidade médio dos concretos permeáveis assumiu valores entre 8,2 e 21,8 m.s-1, A condutividade térmica e a porosidade total possuem uma relação inversamente linear com ótimo ajuste e seus valores médios diminuíram de 0,55, a 0,44 W.m-1. K-1 conforme a porosidade total aumentou de 23,1 para 34,0%. Diante do exposto considera-se que o concreto permeável pode ser aplicado na construção civil como material alternativo para fins de melhoria do conforto térmico, visto sua condutividade térmica, coeficiente de permeabilidade e bom desempenho mecânico, remetendo-se ao traço de melhor desempenho, com índice de vazios de 20% e porosidade total de 23,1%.
