Polysaccharides as Green Fuels for the Synthesis of MgO: Characterization and Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activities

Abstract: The synthesis of structured MgO is reported using feedstock starch (route I), citrus pectin (route II), and Aloe vera (route III) leaf, which are suitable for use as green fuels due to their abundance, low cost, and non-toxicity. The oxides formed showed high porosity and were evaluated as antimicrobial agents. The samples were characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cryst… Show more

“…The bands at 1425 and 1085 cm −1 were attributed to the asymmetric and symmetric stretching of an unidentate carbonate on the surface, respectively [4,39]. The bands in the spectrum after the incorporation of Ni 2+ (Figure 3b) at 1582 and 1398 cm −1 are from the symmetrical and asymmetrical ν(COO − ) [40,41].…”

“…The utilized MgO was synthesized by the same route as Balaba et al [4], using cassava starch. The experimental procedure began with the extraction of starch (500 g) in 2.5 L of deionized water under stirring for 3 h followed by sieving.…”
