Polypyrrole‐coated alginate/magnetite nanoparticles composite sorbent for the extraction of endocrine‐disrupting compounds

Abstract: Magnetite nanoparticles incorporated into alginate beads and coated with a polypyrrole adsorbent were prepared (polypyrrole/Fe3 O4 /alginate bead) and used as an effective magnetic solid-phase extraction sorbent for the extraction and enrichment of endocrine-disrupting compounds (estriol, β-estradiol and bisphenol A) in water samples. The determination of the extracted endocrine-disrupting compounds was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector. The effect of various p… Show more

“…It is mainly their gelling properties that are at the origin of their industrial applications. Due to this ability to form stable hydrogels, alginates can encapsulate different materials (15), which can strengthen their adsorption properties or confer them other properties, such as, for example, magnetic properties when magnetic nanoparticles are trapped in the polymer matrix (16)(17)(18)(19). Therefore, alginate is currently a hot topic for environmental research and many polymer nanocomposites are developed for applications in this field (20)(21)(22)(23)(24).…”

“…A comparison of the extraction efficiency of the current method with other methods for the determination of DECs was made. The data in Table illustrate that the current method has a comparable or better results compared with the other reported sample preparation methods in terms of linearity, LODs, RSDs, and recovery, indicating that the current method is sensitive and efficient, and it can be used to analyze trace level of the target analytes in real samples.…”

“…Most applications of alginate in m-m-dSPE methods have been reported by Bunkoed et al [109,143,144]. For the preparation of the magnetic sorbents, MNPs were firstly prepared by the coprecipitation method, and then dispersed in a sodium alginate solution.…”

“…In the first study, MWCNTs were also included in the initial dispersion to prepare a composite with improved extraction ability towards PAHs [143]. In the following applications, the Fe 3 O 4 /alginate beads were coated with a layer of polypyrrole [109] or polyaniline [144], by dispersing the magnetic beads in the monomer solution before the polymerization reaction. In all cases, low amounts (few mg) of the magnetic sorbent were dispersed in the water samples to isolate the PAHs [143,144] or endocrine-disrupting compounds [109].…”
