Polyphenylsilsesquioxane Partially-substituted with Germanium: Refractive Index Controllability and Thermal Stability

Abstract: The refractive index of a novel silicon-germanium ladder copolymer synthesized by partially substituting silicon in the main chain of polyphenylsilsesquioxane by germanium could be controlled between 1.558 and 1.573 by changing the content of germanium up to 10 mol%, without losing thermal stability over 500 °C.

“…Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) Properties of the Eu(III) Complexes. The ASE properties of the Eu(III) complexes were measured by incorporating them into polymer thin films of PPSQ . The PPSQ thin films containing the Eu(III) complexes were excited by the third harmonic generation of a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser (355 nm), and the emission decays of the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition (615 nm) from the edges of the thin films were monitored (Figure ).…”

“…The film thickness was found to be 2.0 μm, using surface profiler (Veeco Instruments Inc.DEK-TAK3). PPSQ is a ladder-type polymer having siloxane bonds as a main chain, and has high transparency in the visible and ultraviolet region . The optical microcavity was constructed by forming a high refractive film of PPSQ (refractive index: 1.558) on the glass substrate.…”

“…According to the polymer matrix for the preparation of polymer thin-films, we selected polyphenylsilsesqioxane. PPSQ is a ladder-type polymer with siloxane bonds as a main chain, and has high transparency in the visible and ultraviolet region [11]. The optical micro-cavity was constructed by forming a high refractive film of PPSQ (refractive index: 1.558) on the glass substrate.…”

“…They are used as waveguides [7][8][9][10] and coatings for optical devices. [11][12][13][14] Incorporation of various lanthanide complexes [15][16][17] into polyphenylsilsesquioxanes allows one to obtain plastic luminescent materials. The addition of luminophores to PPSQ by chemical reactions appears even more attractive.…”
