Polyphenols in northern Hungarian Mentha longifolia (L.) L. treatedwith ultrasonic extraction for potential oenological uses

Abstract: IntroductionWild mint or horsemint (Mentha longifolia (L.) L., syn. Mentha sylvestris L.) is a perennial herb belonging to the genus Mentha of the family Lamiaceae. The genus Mentha includes about 20 species with many subspecies and varieties including many medicinal and culinary herbs. These taxa can hybridize easily and thus their differentiation is relatively difficult. In recent years, morphological, cytological, and chemotaxonomic studies made the classification of Mentha plants more clear. The genus is i… Show more

“…Considering the relations of structure and antiradical activity, three groups of flavonoids may deserve attention, i) luteolin-7-O-glycosides like lonicerin and cynaroside, ii) eriodyctiol derivatives (eriocitrin) and iii) derivatives of quercetin, among which rutin is as frequently reported from M. longifolia samples as cynaroside. Rutin content was found to be in significant correlation with the FRAP activity of M. longifolia (Patonay et al 2017). Park et al (2019) also observed strong antioxidant activity to their rutin-dominated M. longifolia sample.…”

“…Petersen and Simmonds (2003) summarize RA as adstringent, AO, antiviral, antimutagen and antiinflammatory agent. Investigations on M. longifolia phenolics have predominantly been focusing on RA as a potent AO (Dudai et al 2006;Fialová et al 2008;Krzyzanowska et al 2011;Patonay et al 2017) antiinflammatory (Shen et al 2011) and anticholinesterase (Vladimir-Knežević et al 2014) molecule. The available quantitative data dealing with RA content of M. longifolia is summarized in Table 2.…”

“…The vasodilatory effect was mediated through a combination of Ca +2 channel blockade (concentrated in a non-polar fraction) and endothelium-dependent pathway linked to vascular muscarinic receptors (concentrated in a polar fraction) [78]. The role of antioxidant effect of phenolics and total flavonoids contents was also reported [79,80].…”
