Seaweed has emerged as one of the most promising resources due to its remarkable adaptability, short development period, and resource sustainability. It is an effective breakthrough to alleviate future resource crises. Algal resources have reached a high stage of growth in the past years due to the increased output and demand for seaweed worldwide. Several aspects global seaweed farming production and processing over the last 20 years are reviewed, such as the latest situation and approaches of seaweed farming. Research progress and production trend of various seaweed application are discussed. Besides, the challenges faced by seaweed farming and processing are also analyzed, and the related countermeasures are proposed, which can provide advice for seaweed farming and processing. The primary products, extraction and application, or waste utilization of seaweed would bring greater benefits with the continuous development and improvement of applications in various fields. Mass Spectrometric Identification of Licania rigida Benth Leaf Extracts and Evaluation of Their Therapeutic Effects on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammatory Response

Licania rigida Benth has been evaluated as an alternative drug to treat diseases associated with inflammatory processes. This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous and hydroalcoholic leaf extracts of L. rigida with inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharides in in vitro and in vivo inflammation models. The phytochemical profile of the extracts, analyzed by ultra-fast liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, revealed the presence of gallic and ellagic acids in both extracts, whereas isovitexin, ferulate, bulky amino acids (e.g., phenylalanine), pheophorbide, lactic acid, and pyridoxine were detected in the hydroalcoholic extract. The extracts displayed the ability to modulate in vitro and in vivo inflammatory responses, reducing approximately 50% of pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), and inhibiting both NO production and leukocyte migration by approximately 30 and 40% at 100 and 500 µg/mL, respectively. Overall, the results highlight and identify, for the first time, the ability of L. rigida leaf extract to modulate inflammatory processes. These data suggest that the leaf extracts of this plant have potential in the development of herbal formulations for the treatment of inflammation.

Glasswort (Salicornia herbacea L.) is a halophyte that exhibits antioxidant and antidiabetic effects. Only a few studies have been conducted on its antioxidant effects. Here, we isolated an antioxidant using an activity-based purification method, and the resulting compound was identified as (9Z,11E)-13-Oxooctadeca-9,11-dienoic acid (13-KODE). We investigated its ability to suppress inflammatory responses and the molecular mechanisms underlying these abilities using lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. We studied the anti-inflammatory effects of 13-KODE derived from S. herbacea L on RAW 264.7 macrophages. 13-KODE inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production by suppressing inducible NO synthase and suppressed LPS-induced tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-1β expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages. LPS-mediated nuclear localization of NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase activation were inhibited by 13-KODE. 13-KODE significantly reduced LPS-induced production of reactive oxygen species and increased the expression of nuclear factor erythroid-2 like 2 (Nfe2I2) and heme oxygenase 1. Overall, our results indicate that 13-KODE may have potential for treating inflammation.
