Polyphenol-Rich Liupao Tea Extract Prevents High-Fat Diet-Induced MAFLD by Modulating the Gut Microbiota

Abstract: The modulation of gut microbiota dysbiosis might regulate the progression of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Here, we found that polyphenol-rich Liupao tea extract (PLE) prevents high-fat diet (HFD)-induced MAFLD in ApoE−/− male mice accompanied by protection of the intestinal barrier and downregulation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-related Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MyD88) signaling in the liver. Fecal microbiome transplantation (FMT) from PLE-and-… Show more

“…Therefore, it is reasonable to consider that gut dysbiosis, resulting in the dysregulation of SCFA production, increases the susceptibility of liver injury. In fact, MAFLD pathogenesis is closely associated with gut dysbiosis [ 108 ]. The gut dysbiosis could accelerate the development of MAFLD due to abnormal levels of gut microbial metabolites and/or their effects on gut epithelial permeability [ 109 , 110 ].…”

“…LBT also prevents NAFLD through improving intestinal barrier function and modifying the gut microbiota communities, especially by reducing the level of NAFLD‐related Allobaculum (Li, Mao et al., 2022). Besides, LBT extract prevented NAFLD through the downregulation of lipopolysaccharide‐related toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4)–myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MYD88) signaling (Tang et al., 2022).…”

“…Tang et al. (2022) proved the preventive effects of polyphenol‐rich LBT extract, which reversed intestinal barrier permeability and inhibited TLR4–MYD88 signaling in the liver. The key active components, including EGCG, EA, and caffeine, have been identified in LBT water extract for the anti‐obesity effects, targeting the PI3K‐Akt signaling, tumor necrosis factor signaling, and insulin resistance pathways (Wu et al., 2023).…”
