“…Previously, hypoglycemic effects of maqui berry were reported for supraphysiological levels of supplementation with the anthocyanin-enriched extract (100–500 mg/kg) and purified delphinidin 3-sambubioside-5-glucoside (425 mg/kg) [45]. Beneficial metabolic effects of black currant anthocyanins have been also described [15,46]. We observed a similar outcome from consumption of blueberry monoglycosylated delphinidins, malvidins, and petunidins (non-acylated) as compared to the Concord grape (acylated).…”

“…These phenotypes were associated with reduced leptin (adipocyte derived enhancer of energy expenditure) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma co-activator 1 alpha (Ppargc1α) mRNA levels, and differential methylation patterns of Leptin and Ppargc1α promoters in adipocytes from apple-supplemented rats. Other bioactive phenolics, such as anthocyanins found in dark color fruits, modulate epigenetic pathways to reduce HF diet-induced inflammation (Benn et al, 2014) and cancer risk (Fimognari et al, 2008; Gerhauser, 2008; Wang et al, 2013a). However no studies have shown epigenetic modulations of anthocyanin on adipocyte differentiation and metabolism leading to obesity.…”

“…Blackcurrant is a berry fruit well known as a rich source of anthocyanin and phenolic compounds and popular as a colorant, flavoring and preserver in food and beverages for human consumption. Moreover, recent studies suggested blackcurrant exerts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and has potential health benefits against hypertension, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease and ocular disease [65,66]. Mfce's free-radical scavenging activity against ABTS ·+ radical (Table 5), when expressed as mg TE/mL of extract, resulted 111.782 ± 7.5 mg of TE per mL, in the same range as those reported by Bermúdez-Soto et al [42] for chokeberry, elderberry and blackcurrant fruit juice concentrates.…”
