Polyphenol Extract of Moringa Oleifera Leaves Alleviates Colonic Inflammation in Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Treated Mice

Abstract: Moringa oleifera Lam. is an essential herb used for the treatment of inflammation, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other diseases. In this study, phenolic extracts of M. oleifera leaves were obtained and analyzed. The results showed that the main identifiable phenols were astragalin, chlorogenic acid, isoquercitrin, kaempferitrin, luteolin, quercetin, and rutin. The effects of M. oleifera polyphenol extract (MOPE) on experimental colitis induced by 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) were investigated. The resu… Show more

“…Therefore, effective treatment strategies for IBD, especially using dietary interventions with low cost and no side effects, are needed to be developed (30). As compared to the studies, concerning the effects of bioactive nutrients, such as multiple sources of polyphenols (31)(32)(33), the studies, investigating the relationship between macronutrients in a daily diet and IBD, are relatively limited. Lipid is an essential macronutrient for humans and animals.…”

“…is an essential herb used in the treatment of various diseases such as inflammation, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Quantities of 50 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg of M. oleifera polyphenol extract, rich in quercetin, kaempferitrin, chlorogenic acid, luteolin, and rutin, has been found to alleviate the symptoms of dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis by the downregulation of NF-κB p65 and p-IκBα [86].…”

“…In the past, accumulating evidences suggested that polyphenols are potential sources of alternative medications to treat the oxidative stress and inflammation associated with degenerative diseases, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and cardiovascular disease [9]. More importantly, a recent study showed that polyphenol extract of Moringa oleifera containing astragalin, chlorogenic acid, isoquercitrin, kaempferitrin, luteolin, quercetin, and rutin could alleviate colonic inflammation in DSS-treated mice associated with the NF-κB signaling pathway [10], indicating the anti-inflammatory potential of polyphenols on intestinal diseases. The small intestine plays a key role in the digestion and absorption of nutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.…”
