By adding soy flour (soy) to linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE), soy‐PE fibers with enhanced hydrophilic characteristics were developed. Blends containing only soy and LLDPE had limited draw‐down, and the resulting thick fibers showed poor mechanical properties. When monoglyceride was added as a compatibilizer, thin fibers with good properties could be successfully spun due to improved dispersion of soy agglomerates in the LLDPE melt. Fibers spun from a blend containing 23/7/70 wt % of soy‐monoglyceride‐LLDPE displayed a tensile modulus and strength of 615 ± 38 and 57 ± 8 MPa, respectively. At 30% less synthetic content, these fibers still displayed mechanical properties generally comparable to those of base polyethylene fibers. Contact angle measurements showed that the soy‐based fibers had a hydrophilic surface (contact angle of 33° ± 4°). Moisture absorption studies confirmed that soy‐PE fibers gained about 20 wt % moisture in 1 h, whereas neat LLDPE fibers did not absorb any significant amount (LLDPE is hydrophobic). This hydrophilic behavior of soy‐PE fibers mimics that of natural fibers. Presence small soy agglomerates on the fiber surface also provides a textured surface and a desired tactile feel to the soy‐PE fibers, which coupled with hydrophilic behavior indicates their potential use in disposable nonwovens. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the novel morphology of polypropylene (PP) and poly(ethyleneco-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) blend fibers is described. More precisely, the blend fibers of PP-EVOH containing a small amount of EVOH (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9% by weight), with and without epoxy (1 wt %), have been melt-spun at a constant spinning velocity (500 m/min). For the as-spun fiber, both the initial modulus and the tenacity increased with the increase in the EVOH content. The blend fibers with three draw ratios (2, 3, and 4) drawn at room temperature. The scanning electron microscopic study showed that a draw ratio of 2 reveals little about the morphological changes, whereas a draw ratio of 4 showed a streak structure perpendicular to the fiber axis for PP-EVOH (91/9 wt %) blend fibers. In addition, epoxy (1 wt %) containing PP-EVOH (91/9 wt %) blend fiber showed latitudinal streaks.

The global textile fiber output increased five times from 1975 to 2020. Also, in 2010, the combined demand for man-made and natural fibers was projected to increase by 84% within 20 years. Clothing materials are largely made from cotton or petroleum-based synthetic fibers; both sources, however, have adverse environmental impacts. Thus, cotton requires vast amounts of land, water, fertilizers and pesticides, and synthetic fibers are not biodegradable. This scenario has raised the need for further exploration of cellulose polymers as sustainable sources for the textile industry. Cellulose, the most abundant renewable organic material on earth, is an outstanding polymer that by chemical derivatization or modification can offer a broad range of applications. Dissolving-grade pulp (DGP), which consists of highly pure cellulose, is the most suitable material for manufacturing cellulose derivatives and regenerated fibers. The latter are typically obtained by using the viscose process, which has considerable adverse environmental impacts. Although the textile industry has progressed substantially, further efforts are still needed to make its entire production chain more sustainable. This article provides an in-depth introduction to the potential of fibers with a high cellulose content, known as dissolving-grade pulps. It reviews the properties of DGP, the cooking and purifying methods typically used to obtain it, and the process by which paper-grade pulp can be converted into dissolving-grade pulp. Also, it discusses traditional and recently developed technologies for producing regenerated cellulose fibers. Finally, it examines the potential for recovering cellulose from textile waste as a novel sustainable practice.
