Structure D 2000Polymorphy of Monoclinic Terbium Triborate, TbB3O6. -Crystals of the monoclinic phase of the title compound are synthesized by the lead borate flux method from mixtures of PbO:B2O3:Tb4O7 = 5:40:2 (molar ratio) and crystals of the orthorhombic phase from mixtures of LiBO2:B2O3:Tb4O7 = 2:8:0.25 (Pt crucible, 1213 K, 12 h). As revealed by single crystal XRD, DSC, and temperature-dependent polarization microscopy monoclinic TbB3O6 exhibits a structural phase transition within a broad temperature range below room temperature which shows the typical characteristics of martensitic phase transitions, dominated by spontaneous, rapid, diffusionless shear-like displacements and a rather large thermal hysteresis. At 293 K, monoclinic TbB3O6 crystallizes in the space group C2/c with Z = 4 and at 100 K in the space group P21/c with Z = 4. -(BECKER*, P.; FROEHLICH, R.; Cryst.
