Polymorphisms within the prolactin and growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 functional pathways associated with fertility traits in Holstein cows raised in a hot-humid climate

Abstract: Prolactin (PRL), growth hormone (GH), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) are in hormone-response pathways involved in energy metabolism during thermoregulation processes in cattle. Objective herein was to study the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) within genes of the PRL and GH/IGF-1 pathways with fertility traits such as services per conception (SPC) and days open (DO) in Holstein cattle lactating under a hot-humid climate. Ambient temperature and relative humidity were used to … Show more

“…However, understanding which trait is driving the patterns of selection at a locus remains challenging. Especially as many genes and loci can be associated with a variety of potential traits, with the GHR locus, observed to be under selection in this study, linked to a range of fertility 38 , milk 20 and meat 39 production phenotypes in cattle. We show though that the strength of selection at these loci can be strongly correlated to the differences between breeds of certain traits, providing potential clues as to the driving forces behind the selective sweeps.…”

“…Another very significant QTL for milk yield in Holstein was identified on BTA20 at ~38 Mb. The lead SNP of this QTL was located near the PRLR gene which has previously been associated with fertility in Holstein cows (Leyva-Corona et al, 2018 ; Marete et al, 2018b ). The majority of the associated SNP with fertility, a low heritability trait, were 50 k chip variants.…”

“…Therefore, these hormones may be used to enhance the milk production. HS suppresses the production of GH and PRL and caused the alteration of energy metabolism [32]. Higher plasma concentrations of GH and PRL in NCG-treated cows than those in the control may explain the enhanced energy metabolism for milk synthesis and improved the productive performance of dairy cows under HS.…”
