Polymorphisms of the uridine-diphosphoglucuronosyltransferase 1A1 gene and coronary artery disease

Abstract: Abstract:Bilirubin, an antioxidant in the blood, plays a role in protection from atherosclerosis. The level of bilirubin is highly correlated to the incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD). Unconjugated bilirubin is conjugated with glucuronic acid through the reaction of uridine 5'-diphosphate-glucuronosyl transferase 1A1 (UGT1A1). The interactions of CAD and the variations in the coding regions of the UGT1A1 gene have never been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of the UGT1A… Show more

“…Recent advances in System Biology, especially in the context of high-throughput DNA sequencing (genomics), gene expression (transcriptomics), metabolite and ion analysis (metabolomics/ionomics) and protein analysis (proteomics) carries with it the challenge of processing and interpreting the accumulating data sets [90][91][92][93][94][95]. Publicly accessible databases and bioinformatic tools are employed to mine this data in order to filter relevant correlations and create models describing physiological states [90].…”

“…The UGT1A1 variants were found to be associated with bilirubin concentrations but not with CAD (47 ). A recent small Chinese case-control study on CAD demonstrated similar results in that the UGT1A1 variants were associated with bilirubin concentrations but not with CAD (75 ). It is also important to note that in 3 of the 5 studies (47,73,74 ), possible underlying liver disease (10,20 ) was not controlled for.…”

“…Hsieh et al[38] sought to explore the association of UGTA1A polymorphisms with risk of CAD development. A case-control design was set up ( n = 135; cases = 61, controls = 74) and although bilirubin levels in the control group were found to be significantly higher than CAD group, no significant differences were observed in the polymorphism of UGTA1A between the two groups.…”
