Polymorphisms of the interleukin-4 gene in Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in Taiwan

Abstract: We aimed to evaluate the relationship between two polymorphisms of the IL4 gene (-590T/C and intron 3) and systemic lupus erythematosus in Chinese patients in Taiwan. This study included 91 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 163 unrelated, age matched healthy controls living in the same area. The typing of -590T/C and intron 3 VNTR (variable number of tandem repeats) polymorphisms were performed by PCR-RFLP and PCR, respectively. Allelic frequencies and carriage rates between SLE patients and… Show more

“…A significant association of IL-4 VNTR could influence the type of immune response and increase the development and progression of IgA nephropathy in a Japanese population (Nakashima et al, 2002;Masutani et al, 2003). However, our results were contradictory to findings for other populations (Wu et al, 2003). The discrepancies with previous studies may be due to ethnicity differences, heterogeneous population or sampling bias or possibly due to the environmental factors contributing to the negative associations (Persu, 2006).…”

“…The last ten years have witnessed an increase in the number of patients entering renal replacement therapy due to ESRD (Wu et al, 2003). In Malaysia, the prevalence of dialysis patients increased from 5542 in 1999 to 17,015 in 2007and almost 19,000 in 2008(16th Report of the Malaysian Dialysis & Transplant Registry, 2008.…”

“…3,[31][32][33][34][35][36][37] In this study, this is the first investigation of the association of IL-18 promoter polymorphisms with The w 2 test (2 Â 2 table) was performed to obtain the P-value. The percentages of SLE and control with ht1 were compared with the percentages of SLE and control without ht1.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Arthritis, serum autoantibodies, renal disorder, oral ulcers, skin rash and photosensitivity are developed in combination with one or more symptoms observed in SLE patients. The association of SLE with autoimmunity and inflammation suggests the importance of genes involved in the cytokine network.…”

“…Although IL-4 had not been present in tracheal-alveolar lavage in the fi rst 3 days of infants who later developed BPD [12] , studies have demonstrated that IL-4 is associated with lung injury, infl ammation cytokines and fi brosis [10,11] . IL-4 polymorphisms are associated with various diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus, minimal change nephrotic syndrome, severe respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis [31][32][33] and asthma [34,35] . It is reasonable to speculate that IL-4 polymorphism may be associated with the progression of lung injury in BPD.…”
