Polymorphisms in Several Porcine Genes are Associated with Growth Traits

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to confirm the relation between polymorphism of POU1F1, GH, PRLR and MC4R genes and economically important traits of the Duroc pigs bred in Russia. Studies were carried out on purebred Duroc breed pigs (male n = 360). All pigs were kept under identical and standard conditions. The traits of analysis: The number of Days to 100-kg (Days to 100 kg), Average Daily Gain (ADG), Length of Body (LB) and Backfat Thickness (BF). The additive and dominance effects of genes were calculated. T… Show more

“…In the PIT-1 gene, we demonstrated that genotype AA predominated genotype BB, with allele A was 60% and allele B was 40% in the population. Our results provide strong support for other previous research, such as Lyubov et al (2016), identified the significant effect of genotype Polymorphisms of Candidate Genes Associated with Growth and Carcass Traits in Canadian Duroc Pigs AA/PIT-1 on ADG and LD (Lyubov et al, 2016). Moreover, in European W ild Boar, Pietrain and Meishan pigs, genotype AA was also recorded with a close association with performance and carcass traits (Brunsch et al, 2002).…”

“…Some studies observed an association between variants in the pGH gene with meat quality attributes (Putnová, et al, 2001;Faria et al, 2006;Bižienė et al, 2011;Lyubov, et al, 2016). Rybarczyk et al (2007), studying four SNPs, and Kmieċ et al (2010), evaluating the HaeII polymorphism, observed that this association was weak or non-existent for the characteristics associated with meat quality.…”

“…pGH has more than 300 functions (Waters et al, 2006); it is involved in the growth of skeletal muscles, bone, and adipose tissue (Parr et al, 2016;Lan et al, 2018) and stimulates the production of insulin-like growth factor 1 in the liver (Cheng et al, 2016). Studies to improve meat quality and performance characteristics with variants of the pGH gene were described by Schellander et al (1994); Knorr et al (1997); Cheng et al (2000); Song et al (2003); Franco et al (2008); Bižienė et al (2011);and Lyubov et al (2016).…”
