Polymorphisms in ACE and ACTN3 Genes and Blood Pressure Response to Acute Exercise in Elite Male Athletes from Serbia

Abstract: Physiological adaptations to various types of prolonged and intensive physical activity, as seen in elite athletes from different sports, include changes in blood pressure (BP) response to acute exercise. Also, functional polymorphisms of the angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) and alfa-actinin-3 (ACTN3) genes are shown to be associated with BP parameters changes, both in athletes and sedentary population. In this study, an Alu insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism in ACE gene, as well as nonsense mutation… Show more

“…Polymorphism in angiotensin converting enzyme gene is one of the most frequent examined factors related to sports predispositions. ACE gene is also associated with differences with blood pleasure [24] and fertility [1,25], cardiovascular diseases [1,2628], neurological diseases like Parkinson’s disease [1,29] or Alzheimer disease [1,30,31]. Since years, many of scientists study the role of Insertion/ Deletion polymorphism and their correlation between genetic and physiological backgrounds in sportspeople.…”

“…Since years, many of scientists study the role of Insertion/ Deletion polymorphism and their correlation between genetic and physiological backgrounds in sportspeople. Most research was concentrated on polymorphism in angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) among athletes [3236], swimmers [1,37,38], football players [39], volleyball players [24,40] or ball games players [41]. There is no research relating to ACE polymorphism among horse riders.…”

“…However, these aspects are not completely elucidated, especially regarding the varied types of exercise with different influences on perfusion-dependent aspects of skeletal muscle metabolism. Influences on muscle perfusion are, for instance, expected to result from a high load or lengthening of actively contracting skeletal muscle owing to the resulting compression or stretch of capillaries (reviewed in Durmic et al [19][20][21]). This directly yields to the aim of this study to investigate the ACE I/D genotype-specific effects of interval exercise training, comprising a blend of eccentric and concentric contractions on short maximal muscle performance and endurance-related performance of peripheral muscle, cardio-respiration and aerobic muscle metabolism in healthy subjects.…”

“…ACE converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II, which form part of the renin-angiotensinaldosterone system and are responsible for controlling bodily fluids and especially blood pressure (Guth & Roth 2013, Durmic et al 2017). The variants associated with an ACE polymorphism (rs1799752) have an influence in terms of reducing and increasing enzymatic activity, alleles I (insertion) and D (deletion) of a 287-base pair (bp) Alu element fragment at intron 16, whit the genotypes (II, ID and DD), respectively (Lima et al 2011, Costa et al 2021.…”
