Polymorphisms in Ion Transport Genes Are Associated with Eggshell Mechanical Property

Abstract: Eggshell mechanical property traits such as eggshell breaking strength (ESS), eggshell thickness (EST) and eggshell weight (ESW) are most common and important indexes to evaluate eggshell quality in poultry industry. Uterine ion transporters involve in eggshell formation and might be associated with eggshell mechanical property traits. In this study, 99 SNPs in 15 ion transport genes were selected to genotype 976 pedigreed hens of Rhode Island Red. ESS, EST and ESW were measured for each bird at 55 weeks of ag… Show more

“…In this study, the ABCC9, ITPR2, KCNJ8 and WNK1 genes were associated with EST and ET, and these genes are all involved in ion transport and their expression has been detected in the uterus (Li et al in publication). Previous studies have demonstrated that ion transport plays vital roles in eggshell formation 8 28 . We speculated that more than four genes likely affected EST and ET by regulating ion transport and eggshell mineralization.…”

“…During this process, certain amounts of Ca and bicarbonate ions, and organic matrix precursors are secreted into the uterine fluid, where the organic and mineral phases interact and form the eggshell (after Duan et al . ). Especially in the biochemical/physiological context, Ca sequestration is attributable to the same ion transporter(s) binding a few different elements, which are simultaneously deposited on the outer shell membrane at the shell gland epithelial cell layer interface during shell formation (Scheuhammer , Rodriguez‐Navarro et al .…”

“…Firstly, ion transporters have been suggested to be the promising candidates for the eggshell mechanical properties [ 55 ]. In this study, although a considerable number of ion transporters were differentially expressed between BSD and WSD, there is no evidence supporting that blue and white duck eggs have a significant difference in eggshell quality.…”
