Polymorphisms in Fc Gamma Receptors and Susceptibility to Malaria in an Endemic Population

Abstract: Repeated infections by Plasmodium falciparum result in a humoral response that could reduce disease symptoms and prevent the development of clinical malaria. The principal mechanism underlying this humoral response is that immunoglobulin G (IgG) binds directly to the parasites, thus causing their neutralization. However, the action of antibodies alone is not always sufficient to eliminate pathogens from an organism. One key element involved in the recognition of IgG that plays a crucial … Show more

“…FcγRI has three non-synonymous SNP mutations (rs7531523, rs12078005, and rs142350980) but no studies investigating the association of these polymorphisms with AMR have been published ( 70 ). Furthermore, FcγRIIC has one SNP in intron 7 which has an effect on clearance of parasitaemia, but no studies have been published regarding the link with AMR ( 71 ). As there is currently no literature available on their association with AMR, they are not further discussed in this literature review.…”

“…Variants of IL-12B are protective against cerebral malaria in children ( 25 ). Polymorphisms in Fc gamma receptors on the surface of immune cells such as B-cells, NK cells and macrophages have been linked to resistance and susceptibility to malaria in different population studies ( 26 ).…”
