Polymorphism of the FABP2 gene: a population frequency analysis and an association study with cardiovascular risk markers in Argentina

Abstract: Background: The FABP2 gene encodes for the intestinal FABP (IFABP) protein, which is expressed only in intestinal enterocytes. A polymorphism at codon 54 in exon 2 of the FABP2 gene exchanges an Alanine (Ala), in the small helical region of the protein, for Threonine (Thr). Given the potential physiological role of the Ala54Thr FABP2 polymorphism, we assess in this study the local population frequency and analyze possible associations with five selected markers, i.e. glycemia, total cholesterol, body mass inde… Show more

“…The frequency of the Thr54 allele in Bahrainis and Jordanians is similar to that reported in different European populations [9,21,34]. Also, it is similar to that reported for Argentineans, who are mostly of Europeans descent [28]. It is also similar to that reported for south-east Asians [24][25][26]35].…”

“…The Thr polymorphism has been associated with diabetes related variables in Mexican Americans [37], Pima Indians [7], Japanese men [18,24], Indian migrants [38], and various Caucasian populations [38,39]. In contrast, other studies report no association with the same parameters [20,28,39]. The contradictory results among the different studies may come from the different dietary habits of the analyzed populations [32,41].…”

“…The fact that the polymorphism is in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium suggests that there is no significant natural selection pressure acting against individuals with the Thr54 FABP-2 variant living in Santa Rosa del Conlara, San Luis, Argentina. Other South American frequency analysis of Thr54 were reported by an Argentinean group, who observed a Thr54 frequency of 0.277 in subjects belonged to an ongoing Regional Cardiovascular Prevention Program (RCP program), organized by the Public Health Care Program for Government Employees (OSEP) of Mendoza (Argentina) [31].…”

“…Some genes play important roles in metabolic pathways, and many genes that are involved in the growth and development of animals require more detailed study (Curi et al, 2009). Liver fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) is a member of the FABP multigene family; FAPBs are small intracellular polypeptides found in many tissues involved in fatty acid transfer and metabolism, and are encoded by various genes (Gomez et al, 2007). L-FABP is present in hepatocytes and small intestine mucosa cell cytoplasm.…”
