Polymorphism of phospholipid monolayers

Abstract: Monolayers of synthetic lecithins as well as phosphatidic acid at different stages of ionization were studied with the film balance technique at pressures above the lateral vapour pressure. Pressure (π) versus area (a) curves (isotherms) and, by application of a special technique, area (a) versus temperature (T) curves (isobars) were recorded. From these data, plots of the lateral compressibility, χ, as a function of lateral lipid density (a-1) and of the thermal expansion coefficient, α, as a function of temp… Show more

“…1A). The DMPC isotherm shows characteristic features: a gaseous phase for areas larger than 100 Å 2 , a LE phase at 100 < Å 2 < 70, a LE to LC lipid phase transition between 70 and 45 Å 2 and a LC phase for areas lower than 45 Å 2 [23,24]. Gemcitabine does not form a monolayer and even at high concentrations no isotherm is observable.…”

“…How phospholipid monolayers respond to large changes in area per lipid is not fully understood. 1 Figure 1 shows a plot of the area per lipid versus the lateral pressure for DPPC monolayers at an air-water interface at a temperature of ϳ290 K. 6 The existence of several distinct phases 1 is evident: At high compression ͑molecular area AϽ0.47 nm 2 ) the monolayer is in a condensed 3 ͑C, historically termed solid condensed 1 ͒ phase. Here the lipid chains are in an all-trans conformation 3 and aligned parallel to each other.…”
