Polymorphism in the Assembly of Phase-Segregated Block Molecules: Pathway Control to 1D and 2D Nanostructures

Abstract: Nanomaterials with highly ordered, one- or two-dimensional molecular morphologies have promising properties for adaptive materials. Here, we present the synthesis and structural characterization of dinitrohydrazone (hydz) functionalized oligodimethylsiloxanes (oDMSs) of discrete length, which form both 1- and 2D nanostructures by precisely controlling composition and temperature. The morphologies are highly ordered due to the discrete nature of the siloxane oligomers. Columnar, 1D structures are formed from th… Show more

“…Not only ureidopyrimidone and azobenzenes have been utilized for oligomer materials with interesting properties and highly ordered morphologies, also dinitrohydrazones and naphthalenediimides were attached to the periphery of oDMS. 150,151 Effects of polymorphism and molecular architecture on the morphology were observed. The ability to tailor these A-oDMS-A type block molecules has given great insight in the assembly driving forces and properties of rod-like mesogens and supramolecular moieties in a liquid-like matrix.…”

“…For the synthesis of oDMS conjugates, we used in many recent publications alkene-terminated oligomers or small molecules as substrates to couple to the discrete oDMS using Karstedt's catalyst (Figure 4A). 25,26,[31][32][33][34][35] Here, we discuss the general observations and byproduct formation during the Karstedt catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction.…”

“…38,39 Block co-oligomers with one block consisting of oligodimethylsiloxane (oDMS) of discrete length have been shown to assemble into well-defined phasesegregated structures with sub-10 nm feature sizes, due to the large Flory−Huggins interaction parameter (χ) and low degrees of polymerization (N) of these systems. 40 The introduction of azobenzene moieties in the rigid block has led to structures for sub-5 nm photopatterning, 41 with fast thermal transitions 42 triggered by the high degree of organization of the azobenzene units in spatially ordered domains. Hence, we envision that alternating copolymers combining azobenzene motifs and discrete oDMS blocks will allow the marriage of flexibility and nanoscale properties in polymeric materials.…”
