Polymorphism in ICAM-1, PECAM-1, E-selectin, and L-selectin genes in Tunisian patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: We found an association of inflammatory bowel disease with allele L206 of L-selectin gene, whereas genotype L/F was associated with a subgroup of UC (left-sided type) and CD patients with more extensive location of disease and stricturing behavior. However, further studies are needed to confirm our findings.

“…Its corresponding gene SELE is located on human chromosome 1. Unique among other selectin family molecules, E-selectin typically is not detected in inactivated endothelial cells, but is rapidly synthesized in response to certain cytokines and other pro-inflammatory stimuli, making it a marker of the "activated" endothelial phenotype [2]. Leukocyte-endothelial interactions contribute to a variety of vascular disease processes, such as acute and chronic inflammation and atherosclerosis.…”

“…After the full texts of the remaining 16 articles were examined, seven additional articles were excluded. Ultimately, a total of nine case-control studies examining 1944 IBD patients and 1316 controls were determined to meet our inclusion criteria [4,[12][13][14][15][20][21][22][23].…”

“…Of the nine datasets regarding the K469E polymorphism and IBD susceptibility, eight consisted entirely of data from Caucasian subjects [4,[13][14][15][20][21][22][23], and one dataset was obtained from East Asian subjects [12] . The studies by Braun et al, Papa et al, and Hozek et al suggested that E carriers are more susceptible to IBD, whereas the studies by Low et al and Matsuzawa et al reported that E carriers are associated with a lower incidence of IBD.…”
