Polymerization of Rodlike Micelles

Abstract: A new polymerizable surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium 4-vinylbenzoate (CTVB), has been prepared and investigated. In aqueous solution, highly entangled rodlike aggregates are formed at millimolar surfactant concentrations. Free-radical polymerization of the surfactant counterions results in nearly complete conversion to a stable, nonviscous solution. Small-angle neutron scattering reveals that the micellar diameter of 40 Å is unchanged during the polymerization process and that the final polymerized micelle l… Show more

“…The creation of the pCTVB aggregates has been described previously [Kline 1999], with all materials coming from the same sources identified. Additional cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant was purchased from Fluka, and was thrice recrystalized in ethanol and acetone to ensure purity.…”

“…According to Kline,6,7) since CTAPVB forms short rodlike micelles at a = 0, the micellar solution shows low viscosity. Table I contains the lengths of CTAPVB rodlike micelles (L R ) at a = 0 formed in water, evaluated from SANS data obtained previously.…”

“…Table I contains the lengths of CTAPVB rodlike micelles (L R ) at a = 0 formed in water, evaluated from SANS data obtained previously. 6) Kline assumed that CTAPVB micelles formed with N less than 1600 were rigid cylinders and the micelles bearing N more than 2700 were semi-flexible Table I. Number average molecular weight (M n ), distribution of molecular weight (M w /M n ) and degree of Polymerization (N ) for esterified HPVB, solvent used for polymerization; contour length of PVB -chain (l c ) and length of the rodlike micelles of CTAPVB at a = 0 (L R ).…”
