Polymerization Kinetics Stability, Volumetric Changes, Apatite Precipitation, Strontium Release and Fatigue of Novel Bone Composites for Vertebroplasty

Abstract: 14 Purpose: The aim was to determine effects of diluent monomer and monocalcium 15 phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) on polymerization kinetics and volumetric stability, 16 apatite precipitation, strontium release and fatigue of novel dual-paste composites for 17 vertebroplasty. 18 Materials and methods: Polypropylene (PPGDMA) or triethylene (TEGDMA) glycol 19 dimethacrylates (25 wt%) diluents were combined with urethane dimethacrylate (70 20 wt%) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (5 wt%). 70 wt% filler containing glas… Show more

“…Furthermore, the absorbed water also enables release of ions from hydrophilic/reactive fillers. The water sorption induced expansion of polymer-based materials could be governed primarily by the flexibility of polymer matrix and the addition of hydrophilic components 14,16,21) .…”

“…This may subsequently help to reduce the stress generated at tooth-restoration interface that could lead to gap formation and bacterial microleakage. Additionally, water sorption also enabled the release of active components (drugs/ions) from the reactive fillers 15,16) . Hence, the water sorption may promote the dissolution and diffusion of fluoride from CN which could potentially help to promote remineralization of tooth structure.…”

“…Another proposed strategy to enhance the performance of composites is to enable remineralizing ability 5,9) . The addition of calcium phosphate (CaP) fillers encouraged the release of calcium and phosphate ions that enable the precipitation of mineral apatite on the surface of composites [10][11][12] . The composites containing CaP also promoted remineralization of demineralized dentin 13) .…”

“…Urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) is a dimethacrylate-based resin monomer used in restorative dentistry and the repair of bone tissue [ 1 ]. UDMA and related monomers, including bisphenol A glycol dimethacrylate (BisGMA), triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), and bisphenol A ethoxylated dimethacrylate (BisEMA), with their inorganic particles are activated by light to induce hydrophobic polymerization through cross-linking [ 2 ].…”
