Polymerase chain reaction in the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis

Abstract: In the present study, we present a patient with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique on blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples of the patient. The value of PCR in the diagnosis of aspergillosis is discussed.

“…An additional method for IA diagnosis is PCR [84]. The sensitivity and specificity of PCR in BAL fluid is 67%–100% and 55%–95%, whereas in serum the values are 100% and 65%–92% respectively [85,86]. A possible drawback of PCR diagnostics is the difficulty in discrimination between colonisation and infection [87].…”

“…It is worth mentioning that the currently available brand of piperacillin/tazobactam preparations is less likely to cause false-positive GM results ( 16 ). Furthermore, detecting Aspergillus nuclear material via polymerase chain reaction testing on serum, body fluids or tissue has been another development in the field and is currently undergoing rigorous testing ( 17 ).…”

“…β-D-glucan is, like galactomannan, a cell wall component, which is also found in body fluids and its presence indicates the probability of infection. PCR, although it is a method with high sensitivity and specificity, is cumbersome and lacks in discrimination power between colonization and infection [ 60 , 61 ]. Quantitative real time PCR may pose as a useful alternative in the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis [ 62 ].…”
