Polymer Solar Cells—Interfacial Processes Related to Performance Issues

Abstract: Harnessing solar energy with solar cells based on organic materials (in particular polymeric solar cells) is an attractive alternative to silicon-based solar cells due to the advantages of lower weight, flexibility, lower manufacturing costs, easier integration with other products, low environmental impact during manufacturing and operations and short energy payback times. However, even with the latest efficiencies reported up to 17%, the reproducibility of these efficiencies is not up to par, with a significa… Show more

“…The top anode electrodes and the transparent ITO used as a cathode are modied by interfacial layers with low work function, acting as an electron transport layer (ETL). 5 The ETL plays an inuential role in extracting and transporting photogenerated charge carriers from the photo-active layer to the cathode or anode. At the same time, the ETL also modies the interface between the photoactive layer and the electrode, minimizing interface defects, and charge recombination.…”

“…BHJ solar cells are actually composed of anode/cathode, hole/electron transport layers, and photo-response active layer. Owing to light interferences among these layers, which have different refractive indices and extinction coefficients, the photon-harvesting profile is non-linear along vertical direction (Gusain et al, 2019). On the one hand, vertical phase separation between the donor and acceptor makes this photon-harvesting scenario more complicated, pointing to the importance of filmdepth optical variations.…”

“…Polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells are an attractive group of organic solar cells due to their low manufacturing cost, low weight, low environmental impact, nontoxicity, flexibility, and short energy payback time. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of BHJ solar cells has substantially increased to more than 17% during the past decade [286]. This layered-structure PV device can be easily produced in large areas and different colors on flexible substrates via roll-to-roll inkjet processes.…”
