Polymer optical fibres in healthcare: solutions, applications and implications. A perspective

Abstract: Polymer optical fibres are increasingly being used for medical applications, e.g. as wearable devices for diagnostics or therapeutics. Due to the multitude of applications and the corresponding restrictions and prerequisites, the properties of these optical fibres are fine-tuned to their specific application. Regarding wearables and continuous, unobtrusive long-term monitoring, a very low burden is reached when the integration into textiles is complete and the wearer's comfort is ensured. Here, we discuss a se… Show more

“…These devices use discrete sensors integrated into textiles and there are challenges with comfort of users for long-term health monitoring. An alternative approach to comfortable, unobtrusive physiological monitoring is to integrate optical fibres into textiles [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ] where heart rate and oxygen saturation monitoring have been demonstrated. The advantages of using optical fibres are that they are a low-cost, lightweight, flexible, versatile and robust platform.…”

“…Greater user comfort can be achieved using optical fibres integrated into textiles, often termed as “photonic textiles” [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 22 , 23 ]. This paper describes the first implementation of a textile-based multichannel SpO 2 measurement system and an investigation in a human volunteer study.…”

“…In light of this, several review articles were recently published. For instance, [3,[17][18][19][20] discussed the developments of the textile-integrated polymer optical fibers for healthcare and medical applications. Yet, as one of the fastest growing and most competitive fields, substantial advancements have been made in the last couple of years.…”
