Polymer Optical Fibre Sensors for Endoscopic Opto-Acoustic Imaging

Abstract: Opto-acoustic imaging (OAI) shows particular promise for in-vivo biomedical diagnostics. Its applications include cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and urogenital systems imaging. Opto-acoustic endoscopy (OAE) allows the imaging of body parts through cavities permitting entry. The critical parameter is the physical size of the device, allowing compatibility with current technology, while governing flexibility of the distal end of the endoscope based on the needs of the sensor. Polymer optical fibre (POF) presen… Show more

“…In these sensors, the detection of vibration information is achieved through the wavelength interrogation of FBGs. Of course, the intensity of reflection spectrum can also be used to monitor vibration by employing side-band filtering techniques [97,98,99]. These sensors provide high dynamic strain sensitivity and realize the compensation of temperature over a full range.…”

“…The point detection approach allows for multiple structures to be inscribed in the same fibre at different wavelengths and have a small array of sensors within a single fibre. We have previously presented initial ultrasonic measurements using an mPOF sensor that leverages the unique strengths of FBGs [11]. In order to eliminate the facet as a cause of interferometric signals and to demonstrate a compact detector, connectorised sensors are required.…”
