Polymer Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications

Abstract: Bionanocomposites have established themselves as a promising class of hybrid materials derived from natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers and organic/inorganic fillers. Different chemistries and compositions can lead to applications from tissue engineering to load-bearing composites for bone reconstruction. A critical factor underlying biomedical nanocomposite properties is interaction between the chosen matrix and the filler. This ar ticle discusses current efforts and key research challenges in the de… Show more

“…In fact, biodegradation of materials depends to some extent on hydrophilicity, and hydrophilicity is the most significant determinant of how the mechanical properties of introduced materials change once they are used in patients. [4] Our research supported these observations in part, since PLA-coated membrane had higher tear www.interscience.wiley.com/journal/sia strength than the other materials; PLA also has higher crystallinity than PGC and PLGA.…”

“…Many efforts have been made in the last decades using novel nanotechnology and nanoscience knowledge in order to obtain nanocomposities with determined biomedical use [1], [2]. The Metal-polymer nanocomposites are a typical example of using nano-particles (nanostructured metal) as additives in polymer matrix.…”

“…The improved understanding of the hierarchical design laws might further enable the development and application of new organic and organic-inorganic multi-featured composites (such as assemblies of carbon nanotubes and proteins or polymer-protein composites [Cui et al 2007;Hule and Pochan 2007;Winey and Vaia 2007)], which will mainly consist of chemical elements that appear in our environment in an almost unlimited amount (C, H, N, O and S). These materials might consequently help to solve human's energy and resource problems (e.g.…”
