Polymer Multilayer Microspheres Loaded with Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Abstract: Optically active nanostructures comprised of polymer multilayer microspheres surrounding semiconductor quantum dots are studied. Comparative analysis of the optical properties of the microspheres with four alternating layers with different refractive indices is performed. Photoluminescence and extinction characteristics of the microspheres are determined by the dimensions, internal structure, and the average refractive index of the particles.

“…If the core and intermediate layer is removed, respectively, a multishell hollow sphere is obtained. [122][123][124][125][126] In some cases, the multishell structure and rattle structure are combined when a solid core is wrapped in multiple hollow shells, as indicated in Figure 4c and 4d. [127] Recently, Chen and co-workers prepared multishell microspheres from azithromycin, an amphiphilic pharmaceutical molecule, by using a very simple self-assembly approach.…”

“…As far as the author is aware, the radiation of active nanosources, placed in multilayered microspheres with included LH material, has inadequately been studied yet, though it is a logical extension of previous works in the case of bare microspheres. Due to recent synthesization of the microspheres with radial variation in the refractive index [23,24], it is of interest to study new electromagnetic phenomenon when nanosources are incorporated not only onto the surface of a microsphere, but also inside various layers of the spherical stack consisting of the LH and conventional materials.…”

“…For instance, Radloff and Halas have demonstrated that tetra-layer concentric nanoshell plasmonic nanostructures exhibited new resonances in the analysis of the plasmon resonant modes and energy controllable hybrid modes via precise tuning of the thickness of the selected shell-layer and the total particle size [6]. Kumacheva and co-workers have synthesized polymer multi-layer microsphere with a quantum dots loaded core and alternating layers with low and high refractive indices, which could be used as optical resonators through increasing the refractive index contrast between the alternating layers and excluding polymers [7]. For these applications, controllable size tuning of each layer and the overcoming of incompatibility between the connecting layers play an essential role.…”
