Polymer monoliths for the concentration of viruses from environmental waters: A review

Abstract: Even at low concentrations in environmental waters, some viruses are highly infective, making them a threat to human health. They are the leading cause of waterborne enteric diseases. In agriculture, plant viruses in irrigation and runoff water threat the crops. The low concentrations pose a challenge to early contamination detection. Thus, concentrating the virus particles into a small volume may be mandatory to achieve reliable detection in molecular techniques. This paper reviews the organic monoliths devel… Show more

“…Regarding multiomics applications, the nanocolumns have found a wide application area in sensitive bioanalytical nano-LC methods [ 7 ]. Among others, monolithic columns have been used for the separation of small molecules [ 10 ] to very large biomolecules [ 11 ] as well as microorganisms [ 12 ]. The development of new monolithic column types (e.g., nanoparticle incorporation) may be a key tool in a wide range of cutting-edge research areas.…”

“…Furthermore, this non‐specificity can lead to the co‐concentration of analysis inhibitors and media components that hinder accurate quantification [ 2 ]. Thus, selective and specific methods for virus adsorption are needed, particularly for the removal and quantification of human pathogens such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) [ 3 ].…”

“…The development of new type of nanocolumns is a critical issue for a wide range of cutting-edge research areas. Although various nanocolumn types such as packed, pillar array columns are still the most popular choice, the monolithic nano-columns provides an enormous versatility, and can be used for a number of challenging applications [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. These type of columns are promising materials that shows several advantages such as large surface area and easy preparation, especially in narrow internal diameter format.…”
