Polymer Injection in Deep Offshore Field: The Dalia Angola Case

Abstract: Whereas on-shore polymer injection may be qualified as a mature EOR technique, considering the hundreds of operations that have been conducted all over the world, only one polymer pilot has been implemented offshore, and none in deep offshore conditions. A very thorough feasibility study of polymer injection has been made on the Dalia field in Angola, a typical deep-offshore high permeability (>1D as an average) sandstone reservoir containing medium viscosity oil (3 to 7cP under reserv… Show more

“…Firstly, there are many situations in which interfacial effects are predominant in the control of the flow. One of the practical cases where this occurs is enhanced oil recovery (EOR), where polymer solutions are often injected into oil-bearing reservoirs (Morel et al 2008). The idea of the technology is to benefit from an increase in the bulk fluid viscosity in the reservoir compared to just water, which increases sweep efficiency by a number of mechanisms including a reduction of hydrodynamic instabilities (Sorbie 1991).…”

“…Large-scale polymer flooding projects are being carried out in China ). This method is also being tried in Angola and Brazil (Morel et al 2010;Bruno 2010). The most widely used polymer for commercial EOR projects is partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM).…”
