Polymer-Induced Fractal Patterns of [60]Fullerene Containing Poly(methacrylic acid) in Salt Solutions

Abstract: Well-defined water-soluble pH-responsive [60]fullerene (C60) containing poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA-b-C60) was synthesized using the atom transfer radical polymerization technique. By varying pH and salt concentration, different types of fractal patterns at nano- to microscopic dimensions were observed for negatively charged PMAA-b-C60, while such structure was not observed for positively charged poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-C60. We demonstrated that negatively charged fullerene containing polyme… Show more

“…20 Over the last couple of few years, we have focused on the synthesis and self-assembly behavior of well-defined fullerene containing polymers. Recently, we have synthesized a series of well-defined stimuliresponsive C 60 containing polyelectrolytes such as poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA-b-C 60 ) 21 and poly(methacrylic acid)-b-C 60 (PMAA-b-C 60 ) 22 , 23 and polyampholytes such as P(MAA-b-DMAEMA)-b-C 60 24 and studied their self-assembly behavior as a function of pH and temperature. Both PDMAEMA-b-C 60 and PMAA-b-C 60 possess micellar-like aggregate at low and high pH respectively.…”

Gold nano-particles coated with pH-responsive PMAA-b-PNIPAM copolymers were prepared in a one-pot synthesis, and their physical properties as a function of pH and temperature were examined.…”

“…Water-soluble C60-containing poly(acrylic acid)(PAA-b-C60) synthesized by Yang et al 25 formed coreshell micelles in aqueous solution, which enhanced the photoconductivity of the film. Tam et al synthesized a series of well-defined C60-containing water-soluble polymeric systemsusing ATRP, such as poly(methacrylic acid)-b-C60 (PMAA-b-C60) and poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-C60 (PDMAEMA-b-C60), and their self-assembly behaviour in aqueous solution was studied as a function of pH and temperature 26,27 . However, to our best of knowledge there has been no attempt to graft C60 onto poly(2-bromomethyl) acrylic acid.…”
