Polymer–cement composite based on recycled expanded polystyrene foam waste

Abstract: A new polymer–cement composite based on a recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) resin has been developed as an effective method for EPS foam wastes management. The liquefied polymer is prepared by dissolving the foam waste in acetone, then in toluene at the ratio 113:2:1 per volume, respectively. The composite is made by incorporating the resulting resin into cement‐paste at selected water:cement ratios. At the end of defined curing periods, the physical, mechanical, and thermal characterizations of the obtained… Show more

“…The justification of this situation because polystyrene itself is a soft particle and unable to resist enormous force when the compression load applied. However, the unique-soft PS beads able to absorb shock and force during compression process, make the foamed cement composite to have longer resisting time before it is fully ruptured [1]. Besides that, it is found that the sample contained more fly ash but less sand has higher compressive strength.…”

“…Nowadays, cement composite had been chosen to be one of the most important components to produce foamed cement composites. Basically, cement composite is a mixture which use cement as a basic material to mix up with water at certain proportion to form a composite [1] such as mortar which widely used for plastering and other building works. Owing to waste concern, the sustainability construction industry becomes the priority all over the world due to the detrimental effects happened.…”

“…It is worth to state that, all the obtained spectra showed, nearly, the same bands assignments with very small differences. The following bands could be differentiated [16,[29][30][31]: The absorption by the OH 2 in the Portlandite, Ca(OH) 2 , appears between 3,640 cm 21 and 3,642 cm 21 .…”

“…Expanded polystyrene foam wastes considered as one of the most issues of ecological problems, especially ocean pollution, because they are nonbiodegradable polymers and hardly decomposed in nature. It was reported that about 25% of total floating fragments in the North Pacific, for example, were foam wastes …”

“…The two main alternatives for managing polymer wastes are mechanical recycling and energy recycling, where they are incinerated . Environmental argumentations, such as toxic emissions, are building up a public resistance against the later process …”
