Polyhedral Vanadium Oxide Cages: Infrared Spectra of Cluster Anions and Size‐Induced d Electron Localization

Abstract: The size-dependent properties of transition metal oxide clusters have been intensely studied not only because of interest in this peculiar state of matter, but also because of their relevance as building blocks for nanostructured materials. Vanadium oxides, in particular, are important in supported catalysts, [1] as cathode materials in lithium batteries, [2] in bolometric detectors, [3] and as ferromagnetic nanotubes. [4] While the structural characterization of vanadium oxide clusters deposited on surfaces [… Show more

“…For example, both charged and neutral vanadium oxide clusters form polyhedral cages unknown in bulk V 2 O 5 . 7,8 A similar behavior was shown for bimetallic V-Ti oxide anion clusters 9 and neutral (TiO 2 ) m clusters. 10 For the latter even clusters of sizes m = 9-15 show geometrical structures which do not correspond to any of the known TiO 2 polymorphs.…”

“…Previously, structural models of oxide clusters have been proposed on the basis of chemical intuition, but only in a few cases have definitive structure assignments been made. [12,15] In this study, we show that the most stable isomers of the [(Al 2 O 3 ) 4 ]+ and (Al 2 O 3 ) 4 clusters exhibit new structural features that are not found in any known solid polymorph of Al 2 O 3 . Their structures were determined through the combination of experiment and density functional theory (DFT), with the implementation of a genetic algorithm (GA) as a global optimization technique.…”

“…These laser sources exhibit a lower intensity than that of IRFELs. Nevertheless, if a weakly bound cluster can be formed between the molecular ion and a rare-gas atom (messenger technique), [82] IR photodissociation spectroscopy can be successfully applied using IR OPO/OPA lasers to characterize the structure of a large variety of gas-phase molecular ions [83,84] [including ionic water-solvated clusters [85] and, recently, water-solvated protonated and lithiated amino acids (e.g. valine)].…”
