An overview of pollen morphology from all genera in the family Polygalaceae is presented to assist systematic studies of the Fabales clade. The pollen of 72 species, representing 18 genera, in Polygalaceae was examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the pollen of eight species, representing seven genera, was examined using transmission electron microscopy. Pollen is described and illustrated for each genus, and the first pollen descriptions and publication of photomicrographs are presented for seven genera: Balgoya, Barnhartia, Comesperma, Diclidanthera, Eriandra, Moutabea, plus Polygala subgenus Badiera, and species previously included in Nylandtia (now in Muraltia). Pollen morphological similarities and differences broadly correspond with relationships suggested by recent molecular phylogenies. The aperture number was also found to correlate with trees generated using molecular data; early branching taxa have lower aperture numbers than later branching ones. The overall range of ectoaperture numbers seen in Polygalaceae, excluding Balgoya, is between five and 33. The pollen of Balgoya is tricolporate; all other genera have pollen with a range of ectoaperture numbers within each sample. The degree of endoaperture fusion to form endocingula is variable at a subgeneric level. All pollen is isopolar, except for that of Heterosamara and Polygala wattersii.

RESUMENSe reporta el redescubrimiento de Polygala corifolia Planch. & Triana después de 170 años de su primera y última colección. Polygala corifolia fue descrita con base en una única colección realizada en la Sabana de Bogotá en 1844. Debido a la ausencia de registros posteriores a su descripción, esta especie se consideraba extinta. El nuevo registro proviene de una nueva localidad en la zona de páramo del municipio de Yarumal, norte de Antioquia. La considerable transformación y las actividades agropecuarias evidenciadas en esta zona, hacen que la supervivencia de esta población y posiblemente de la especie sea poco probable.Palabras clave: Antioquia, Colombia, Páramo, Poygala corifolia. ABSTRACTThe rediscovery of Polygala corifolia Planch. & Triana 170 years after the first and last collection is reported. Polygala corifolia was described based on a single collection made in the Sabana de Bogota in 1844. Due to the absence of records after its description, this species was considered extinct. The new record comes from a new locality in the Páramo of the Yarumal municipality, north of Antioquia. The considerable transformation and agricultural activities evidenced in this area, makes unlikely the survival of this population and possibly of the species.

ResumoApresenta-se um estudo florístico das espécies de Polygalaceae ocorrentes nas cangas da Serra dos Carajás (Pará). São apresentadas descrições, chaves taxonômicas, ilustrações e comentários taxonômicos dos táxons. Neste estudo foram encontradas seis espécies distribuídas em quatro gêneros: Bredemeyera divaricata, B. floribunda, Caamembeca spectabilis, Polygala adenophora, Securidaca diversifolia e S. rivinifolia, nenhuma delas endêmica da região ou do estado do Pará. Palavras-chave: FLONA Carajás, florística. AbstractA floristic treatment of Polygalaceae species from the cangas of the Serra dos Carajás (state of Pará, Brazil) is presented. We provide descriptions, taxonomic keys, illustrations, and taxonomic notes for Polygalaceae taxa from cangas. Six species were found, distributed in four genera: Bredemeyera divaricata, B. floribunda, Caamembeca spectabilis, Polygala adenophora, Securidaca diversifolia e S. rivinifolia, none of them endemic to the region or the state of Pará.
