Polyfuran: a new synthetic approach and electronic properties

Abstract: Polyfuran films have been synthesized by electropolymerization of terfuran and investigated as a function of film preparation conditions in both the doped and undoped state. These films have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, optical absorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, dc conductivity, and electron spin resonance measurements. The electrolyte anion (dopant) used for the preparation of these films heavily influences the -conjugated system of the polymer backbone… Show more

“…26 -28 In 2-methylfuran both effects destabilize the ring -orbitals with a concomitant reduction in ionization energies. The effects are more marked for orbital 3 (1a 2 ), in which the electron density is concentrated along C 2 -C 3 and C 4 -C 5 bonds, than for 2 where the density is along C 3 -C 4 . For furfuryl alcohol similar arguments apply, but in this case, the -OH group counteracts electron donation from the CH 2 group.…”

“…1 Compounds incorporating the furan ring are of major importance in pharmaceutical, polymer, and materials science. 2 Recently, furan compounds have also been implicated in environmental and atmospheric chemistry. 3,4 Given this, it is of interest to explore how the electronic structure of furan is affected on substitution of the ring hydrogen atoms by functional groups.…”

“…For instance, its five-membered ring system consisting of four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom (see Fig. 1) may be regarded to be a building unit in the vitamin B12, biotin [8], conducting polymers [9] and the simple sugars ribose and deoxyribose (dR), the backbone molecules of the RNA and the DNA helix. Moreover, furan and its derivatives play an important role in combustion chemistry, as second-generation biofuels [10,11] or in food and nutrition engineering as a product of thermal degradation of a heat-treated commercial foods [12,13].…”

“…Moreover, both samples contain some characteristic peaks of PVP, such as 1283 cm −1 , 1414 cm −1 , and 1658 cm −1 . For the HTCC, the peaks at 1605 cm −1 , 1448 cm −1 , 1365 cm −1 , and 961 cm −1 can be assigned to the vibrational modes of the furan monomer [22]. The band at 1509 cm −1 is ascribed to the C=C stretching of furan ring in the polymer.…”
