Polyethylenimine Applications in Carbon Dioxide Capture and Separation: From Theoretical Study to Experimental Work

Abstract: Solid absorbents made with polyethylenimine (PEI), which is loaded on different porous substrates, are promising for postcombustion carbon dioxide capture. Herein, theoretical studies of polyamine applications, including PEI for carbon dioxide capture, are reviewed and the development of experimental work on carbon dioxide capture by using PEI summarized. The mechanisms of carbon dioxide capture are discussed at different reaction sites of the polyamines, such as primary, secondary, and tertiary amine groups. … Show more

“…synthesized 3D self‐assembly polyethyleneimine‐modified graphene oxide hydrogel (PEI‐GHs) and they investigated the adsorption performance of uranium using these hybrid materials . In this study, PEI was chosen because it could be easily grafted to the matrix since it has both secondary amines in the linear chain and primary secondary and tertiary amino groups in the branched amines . A possible mechanism involving PEI being either directly adsorbed on the GO surface or covalently functionalized by amide cross‐linking reaction between −COOH groups of GO and −NH 2 groups of PEI.…”

“…On these bases, also taking into account the recent literature [ 47 ] highligting polyethylenimine as one of the greatest candidates for CO 2 sequestration processes, PEI-grafted MWCNTs 4 showing the best capture performance was selected as co-catalysts of titania in the CO 2 photoreduction.…”

“…Consequently, PEI molecule adsorbs on the steel surface physically and 100 μmol L −1 of PEI gives 88% corrosion inhibition efficiency. On the other hand, the PEI molecule has a CO 2 sorption affinity which influence the CO 2 molecule to interact with the PEI adsorbed www.nature.com/scientificreports www.nature.com/scientificreports/ molecule instead of the metal surface [78][79][80][81][82][83] . As a result, a dense protective layer formed over the metal surface in the presence of the PEI corrosion inhibitor and it is more compact than the corresponding layer with the CO 2 as seen in Fig.…”
