Polydopamine-Assisted Fabrication of Stable Silver Nanoparticles on Optical Fiber for Enhanced Plasmonic Sensing

Abstract: We present a facile and effective method for fabrication of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) optical fiber sensor assisted by two polydopamine (PDA) layers with enhanced plasmonic sensing performance. The first PDA layer was self-polymerized onto the bare optical fiber to provide the catechol groups for the reduction from Ag + to Ag o through chelating and redox activity. As the reduction of Ag + proceeds, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were grown in-situ on the PDA layer with uniform distribution. The s… Show more

“…For chemical plating, a surface without catalytic activity needs to be activated, so as to deposit metal particles with catalytic activity on the surface, such as palladium, gold, or silver. PDA contains many catechol and amine functional groups to reduce Ag + into Ag NPs on fiber surface through chelation, and the Ag NPs as the catalytic activation seeds can catalyze chemical copper plating to deposit Cu NPs on the surface of fabrics [22][23][24]. In the initial stage of the reaction, copper ions in the copper plating solution were preferentially reacted with Ag NPs due to the strong catalytic activity For chemical plating, a surface without catalytic activity needs to be activated, so as to deposit metal particles with catalytic activity on the surface, such as palladium, gold, or silver.…”

“…Simultaneously, the average light absorptivity of AgNPs‐PDA‐wax gourd was ~97.3% in the wavelength range of 300‐780 nm, which was owing to the enhancement of the light absorption ability of PDA by the LSPR effect from AgNPs 44 . What's more, because of the resonance coupling process between the metal dipole and the incident light, higher solar absorptivity (93.6%) was displayed after the addition of AgNPs than PDA‐wax gourd in the extented wavelength range of 780 to 2500 nm 45 . Also, the temperature of the evaporator is an important indicator to reveal photothermal conversion ability directly during the evaporation process.…”

“…Double layered polydopamine (PDA) sandwich Ag NPs was proposed, where the first/inner layer served as the substrate with strong adhesion and reductant to improve the deposition process of Ag NPs, the second/outer layer covered on the Ag NPs to prevent them being oxidation and increase the sensitivity [ 48 ]. The disadvantage is that the multi-layer film leads to the wide LSPR spectrum (~ 300 nm), which is disadvantageous to improve the resolution of the sensor.…”
