Polycyclism and phenological variability in the common oak (Quercus robur L.)

Abstract: Polycyclism is the ability for a plant to produce several flushes in the same growing season. The rare phenomenon of common oak (Quercus robur L.) summer flowering is proof of complex polycyclism. Common oak summer flowering and the unusual transformation of inflorescences were the starting point for this study of the phenological variability of common oak trees in identical site conditions. This paper presents comparative research of leaf flushing, flowering, and leaf fall phenophases in a common oak wi… Show more

“…Q. robur bark contains a high amount of tannins (hydrolyzable and condensed tannins) (8%–20%). These tannins are composed of either galloyl esters and their derivatives (gallotannins, ellagitannins, and complex tannins) or oligomeric and polymeric proanthocyanidins and can possess different interflavanyl couplings and substitution patterns (condensed tannins) [11,12]. However, there is no information in the literature regarding the phenolic profile of bark extracts of this species.…”

“…For example, tree saplings can receive more than 90% of the total annual irradiance before leaf expansion of adult trees (Augspurger, Cheeseman, & Salk, 2005). Substantial inter-and intraspecific variation in the timing of tree leaf expansion exists (Bobinac, Batos, Miljković, & Radulović, 2012;Lechowicz, 1984;Wesolowski & Rowinski, 2006), which could create large differences in the yearly biological relevant light transmitted to the forest floor between species compositions. This has never been studied in temperate forests as far as we know.…”

“…praecox and a late Q. robur fo. tardifolia —has been observed (Vikhrov 1954 ; Kleinschmit 1993 ; Rubtsov 1996 ; Wesołowski and Rowiński 2008 ; Batos et al 2012 ; Bobinac et al 2012 ). It should also be noted here that phenological phases can follow diverse patterns in subsequent growing seasons (Ermich 1959 ).…”
