The phytoremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum oil products relies on co-operation between plants and rhizosphere bacteria, including the plant growth-promoting effect of the bacteria. We studied the capacity of strains of Pseudomonas, selected as oil degraders, to produce plant hormones and promote plant growth. Strains with intermediate auxin production were the most effective in stimulating the seedling growth of seven plant species under normal conditions. Bacterial seed treatment resulted in about a 1.6-fold increase in the weight of barley seedlings, with the increment being much lower in other plant species. The strains P. plecoglossicida 2.4-D and P. hunanensis IB C7, characterized by highly efficient oil degradation (about 70%) and stable intermediate in vitro auxin production in the presence of oil, were selected for further study with barley. These strains increased the seed germination percentage approximately two-fold under 5% oil concentration in the soil, while a positive effect on further seedling growth was significant when the oil concentration was raised to 8%. This resulted in a 1.3–1.7-fold increase in the seedling mass after 7 days of growth, depending on the bacterial strain. Thus, strains of oil-degrading bacteria selected for their intermediate and stable production of auxin were found to be effective ameliorators of plant growth inhibition resulting from petroleum stress.

Crude petroleum oil spills are among the most important organic contaminations.While the separated oils accumulated on the surface water are relatively easily removed, the emulsified portions are more difficult to remove and pose significant threats to the environment. Bioremediation using bacteria has proven to be an effective method, but the biomass produced in this case does not have any significant remunerative value. In this work, microalgae were proposed to combine emulsified oil remediation process with the potential of microalgae as a biofuel feedstock, thus enhancing the economic and environmental benefits of the process. A freshwater strain of Chlorella vulgaris was grown in water containing different concentrations of emulsified crude oil at different temperatures. The specific growth rate (μ max ) of the microalgae for each initial oil concentration was determined and was found to increase with the increase in initial oil concentration. For example, at 30 C, the specific growth rate, μ increased from 0.477 to 0.784 per day as the oil concentration increased from 57 to 222 mg/L. At 30 C, the effect of substrate concentration agreed with that of the microalgae growth, whereas at 40 C, the drop in oil concentration decreased with the increase in concentration. The results were fitted to a modified Monod kinetics model that used specific interfacial area as the influential substrate instead of the actual concentration. The results of this study clearly show the potential of using microalgae for emulsified oil remediation at relatively high concentrations.

Cyperus laevigatus L. Enhances Diesel Oil Remediation in Synergism with Bacterial Inoculation in Floating Treatment Wetlands

Diesel oil is considered a very hazardous fuel due to its adverse effect on the aquatic ecosystem, so its remediation has become the focus of much attention. Taking this into consideration, the current study was conducted to explore the synergistic applications of both plant and bacteria for cleaning up of diesel oil contaminated water. We examined that the application of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) is an economical and superlative choice for the treatment of diesel oil contaminated water. In this study, a pilot scale floating treatment wetlands system having diesel oil contaminated water (1% w/v), was adopted using Cyperus laevigatus L and a mixture of hydrocarbons degrading bacterial strains; viz., Acinetobacter sp.61KJ620863, Bacillus megaterium 65 KF478214, and Acinetobacter sp.82 KF478231. It was observed that consortium of hydrocarbons degrading bacteria improved the remediation of diesel oil in combination with Cyperus laevigatus L. Moreover, the performance of the FTWs was enhanced by colonization of bacterial strains in the root and shoot of Cyperus laevigatus L. Independently, the bacterial consortium and Cyperus laevigatus L exhibited 37.46% and 56.57% reduction in diesel oil, respectively, while 73.48% reduction in hydrocarbons was exhibited by the joint application of both plant and bacteria in FTWs. Furthermore, microbial inoculation improved the fresh biomass (11.62%), dry biomass (33.33%), and height (18.05%) of plants. Fish toxicity assay evaluated the effectiveness of FTWs by showing the extent of improvement in the water quality to a level that became safe for living organisms. The study therefore concluded that Cyperus laevigatus L augmented with hydrocarbons degrading bacterial consortium exhibited a remarkable ability to decontaminate the diesel oil from water and could enhance the FTWs performance.
