Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their nitrated derivatives associated with PM10 from Kraków city during heating season

Abstract: Abstract. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), their nitro-derivatives (NPAHs) and hundreds of other organic compounds are present in ambient air in gas and particulate form. PAHs and NPAHs originate from diesel and gasoline exhaust emission and other combustion sources. NPAHs are also formed through the nitration of parent PAHs in the atmosphere. Concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs in the particulate matter fraction PM10 collected in the centre of Kraków (27.01.2014Kraków (27.01. -17.02.2014 [a,h]anthrace… Show more

“…The most concentrated nitro-PAH in Kraków air is 2-nitrofluoroanthene, the same as in NIST SRM 1648a, but in fifty times higher concentration, viz. 12.9 compared to 0.2 mg/kg, respectively [15]. The sulfur content is two times lower than in NIST SRM 1648a.…”

“…A wide range of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be found in the particulate matter collected in Kraków. Among them, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[α]anthracene, and chrysene are the most concentrated components [15]. Extremely high concentrations of organics in Kraków air pollution can be because the samples were collected mostly during the winter season, and the propensity of aggregation of organics from air pollution to total suspended particles increases with decreasing temperature [16].…”

“…The air quality in early spring, late autumn and winter are often very poor in several areas worldwide. For instance, Poland is a leader in air quality issues, with PM10 levels exceeding EU directive standards several times, and permissible limits from the WHO recommendations several dozen times (Styszko et al 2015(Styszko et al , 2016Szramowiat et al 2016;Samek et al 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses on providing a device to address the burden of outdoor air pollution on vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly by installing an air purifier in outdoor spaces they regularly occupy.…”

“…Studies demonstrated that large composition and dust distribution variation depends on specific local environmental conditions and location on Earth. In rural regions, the main source of the dust is the soil and plants while in the cities, contamination deposited on surfaces is the result of the dust and pollution which originates from different sources and which often contains organic compounds (Styszko et al 2016 ; Szramowiat et al 2016 ) and heavy metals (Styszko et al 2015 ) derived from road transport and high emission from coal-fired heating systems (Samek et al 2017 ). One identified a strong correlation between the quantity and structure of the dust and the season due to variation in the weather conditions (Sarver et al 2013 ) and sources of pollution.…”
