Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and risk elements in honey from the South Moravian region (Czech Republic)

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the actual content of some exogenous contaminants in the honey from the South Moravian region of the Czech Republic. The content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and risk elements (Mercury -Hg, Cadmium -Cd, Lead -Pb, and Arsenic -As) in multifloral blossom and honey dew samples of honey were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography and atomic absorption spectroscopy methods. The samples were collected form beekeepers and from retail stores located in… Show more

“…Sums of all 15 PAHs in honey ranged from 2.8-18.1 µg kg -1 . Our benzo[a]pyrene levels in honey correspond to those reported in the studies of Czech (33) and Polish honey (34). It is interesting that the sum of benzo[a] anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and benzo[a] pyrene in French honey taken from non-urban sites (0.03-5.80 µg kg -1 ) was higher than the sum of these PAHs in our samples (35).…”

“…Cd content ranged between 0.02-0.03 mg/kg, Pb content was 0.03-0.66 mg/kg, and As content was in the range of 0.38-2.25 mg/kg, respectively. The average measured content for As in five sub-regions was higher than permitted by national legislation (< 0.5 mg/kg) and much higher than in samples from the Czech Republic (Batelková et al 2012) where the levels of As were between 0.001 and 0.004 mg/kg or from Chile (Bastías et al 2013) where they ranged from 0.002 mg/kg to 0.172 mg/kg. The high concentration of As is worrying, and this issue may be the subject of future research.…”
