Polyclad phylogeny persists to be problematic

Abstract: Two conflicting morphological approaches to polyclad systematics highlight the relevance of molecular data for resolving the interrelationships of Polycladida. In the present study, phylogenetic trees were reconstructed based on a short alignment of the 28S rDNA marker gene with 118 polyclad terminals (24 new) including 100 different polyclad species from 44 genera and 22 families, as well as on a combined dataset using 18S and 28S rDNA genes with 27 polyclad terminals (19 new) covering 26 different polyclad s… Show more

“…Genetic distance. In terms of partial 28S rDNA sequences, the uncorrected pdistance between the overlapping 972 bp of LC508269-508272 (979 bp) from Japan, and GenBank MN384704 (1395 bp) from Punat, Adriatic Sea (Dittmann et al 2019), was 0.02160.…”

“…Polyclads are macroscopic, almost exclusively marine rhabditophoran flatworms. They are divided into Cotylea (350 described species), predominantly presenting a ventral sucker posterior to the female copulatory opening and Acotylea (450 described species) without such an organ (Lang 1884;Martín-Durán and Egger 2012;Dittmann et al 2019). Name giving for the taxon Polycladida is the gut with its many ramifications (Lang 1884).…”
