Polychlorinated Naphthalenes and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Fishes from Michigan Waters Including the Great Lakes

Abstract: Polychlorinated naphthalene (PCN) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured in whole body and fillet of fishes collected from Michigan waters, including the Great Lakes, during 1996−1997. PCNs were found in all the fishes analyzed including those from Siskiwit Lake, a remote lake located near the southern shoreline of Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. Concentrations of total PCNs in fishes ranged from 19 to 31 400 pg/g, wet wt, and varied depending on sampling location and species. F… Show more

“…PCNs have been proven to have dioxin-like toxic activities [20,21], and the toxic equivalent factors (TEFs) of several PCN congeners relative to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin have been studied [20][21][22][23][24][25]. In this study, the TEFs of several PCN congeners, summarized by Noma et al [26], were adopted in the calculation of the 1−8 PCN toxic equivalents (TEQs).…”

“…Studies on the levels of PCNs in the environment are of broad interest. To date, PCNs have been measured in air [6] , soil [7] , sediment and biota [8,9] . Compared with other POPs, such as PCBs and dioxins, however, knowledge on levels, sources and effects of these compounds in the environment is very limited [10] .…”

“…Although there are currently no internationally authorized toxic equivalency factor (TEF) schemes for PCN congeners, many studies have been performed to evaluate the TEF for individual PCN congeners relative to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) (Hanberg et al 1990;Villeneuve et al 2000;Blankenship et al 2000;Behnisch et al 2003;Kannan et al 2000). Some TEFs for individual PCN congeners have been proposed and used to evaluate the toxicities of PCNs.…”
