Stormwater ponds improve water quality by facilitating the sedimentation of particles and particulate contaminants from urban runoff. Over time, this function entails the accumulation of contaminated sediments, which must be removed periodically to maintain a pond’s hydraulic and treatment capacity. In this study, sediments from 17 stormwater sedimentation facilities from four Swedish municipalities were analyzed for 259 organic substances likely to be found in the urban environment. A total of 92 substances were detected in at least one sample, while as many as 52 substances were detected in a single sample. A typical profile of urban contamination was identified, including polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organotins, aliphatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, aldehydes, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, perfluorinated substances, and alkylphenols. However, levels of contamination varied greatly between ponds, influenced heavily by the dilution of urban pollutants and wear particles from other sources of particles such as eroded soil, sand, or natural organic matter. For 22 of 32 samples, the observed concentrations of at least one organic substance exceeded the regulatory threshold values derived from toxicity data for both sediment and soil.

The presence of dissolved polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and PCBs associated with particle influent and effluent samples from a bioretention stormwater control measure was studied. The Kaplan−Meier survival procedure was used to sum PCB congeners for concentrations below detection limits. For influent samples, concentrations of dissolved PCBs ranged from 66 ± 17 to 752 ± 23 ng/L, and the concentration decreased by 66−93% in the effluent after bioretention treatment to 20.8 ± 5.1 to 53.0 ± 10.0 ng/L. The concentrations of total PCBs in the particulate phase of the influent ranged from 176 to 649 ng/g (median of 316 ng/g). The particle-based PCB concentration decreased by 99.6% in one event due to bioretention treatment. The overall PCB load reduction via bioretention treatment is estimated at 82−85%. 3,3′-Dichlorobiphenyl (PCB 11) was detected in all stormwater influent samples and constituted 3−20% of the total dissolved PCB concentration. Particulate concentrations of PCBs ranged from only 3 to 15% of the total PCB mass in stormwater samples, showing that dissolved PCBs are important and must be considered in stormwater loads. Bioretention systems are effective infrastructure facilities for the reduction of PCB loads, although additional treatment may be needed to address dissolved PCBs.

The non‐Aroclor congener PCB‐11 was detected in all samples including at high levels in a sample containing small yellow flakes, which when tested also had very high levels and appeared to be yellow traffic paint (Cao, Capozzi, Kjellerup, & Davis, 2019). Additional testing is needed to explore whether azo‐type pigments such as those used in traffic paint are a nonpoint source of PCBs.…”

This review summarizes over 280 studies published in 2019 related to the characterization, control, and management of urban stormwater runoff. A summary of quantity and quality concerns is provided in the first section of the review, serving as the foundation for the following sections which focus on the control and treatment of stormwater runoff. Finally, the impact of stormwater control devices at the watershed scale is discussed. Each section provides a self-contained overview of the 2019 literature, common themes, and future work. Several themes emerged from the 2019 literature including exploration of substrate amendments for improved water quality effluent from stormwater controls, the continued study of the role of vegetation in green infrastructure practices, and a call to action for the development of new models which generate reliable, computationally efficient results under the physical, chemical, biological, and social complexity of stormwater management. © 2020 Water Environment Federation • Practitioner points • Over 280 studies were published in 2019 related to the characterization, control, and treatment of urban stormwater. • Studies on bioretention and general stormwater characteristics represented the two most common subtopics in 2019. • Trends in 2019 included novel substrate amendments, studies on the role of vegetation, and advancements in computational models.
