An evaluation of the PCB residues from CauBay River and KieuKy area, Vietnam was carried out. CauBay River has been playing an important role in irrigated water supply for agriculture activities at KieuKy area in the downstream. The PCBs concentrations of sediment, soil samples were analyzed and obtained results indicated the wide extent of contamination of PCBs in CauBay River (from 30.74 to 167.35 ng g(-1) dry weight) and KieuKy area (from 21.62 to 60.22 ng g(-1) dry weight). This clearly reflected the effect of PCB residues from CauBay River to the quality of agricultural soil of the KieuKy area. The PCBs composition analyses in the samples reflect their long-time release. The total cancer risk of PCBs in the soil of KieuKy fell into the very low range suggesting low risk. However, since PCBs were the species of POPs with more concern in this area, ecological risk assessment should be further investigated.

Soils and sediments of the Thua Thien-Hue Province (central Vietnam): recognizing trace element sources and the likely influence of natural events

Trace element concentrations have been measured in soil and sediment samples taken from the Thua Thien Hue (TT-H) Province and the Tam Giang-Cau Hai (TG-CH) Lagoon in 2002 and 2004. Results show that the lagoon is only slightly contaminated by elements such as Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, whereas As, probably naturally enriched in this Asian region, reaches values above the lowest internationally accepted sediment quality guidelines. Concentrations in soils are ascribable to natural sources and distributions in the TG-CH Lagoon are mainly influenced by river inputs, with Ag and Cd undergoing estuarine desorption processes. However, concentration-depth profiles of most trace elements in sediments show a recent increasing trend that might be linked to the economic development of the area. The comparison of porosity and 210 Pb depth profiles (confirmed also by Cd and As) from repeated samplings of the same core locations in the TG-CH Lagoon seems to account for a loss of 5-10 cm of surficial sediment that took place during the time interval between the two samplings. It is hypothesized that extreme meteorological events (e.g. a major typhoon that hit the area in November 2003) could be responsible for such sediment displacement.

Abstract:Understanding the sources and sinks of nutrients is of significant importance for better management of pond water quality and the environmental impact of aquaculture. The objective of the present study was to estimate the nutrient mass balances of four intensive shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) ponds in Tam Giang Lagoon, Central Vietnam, using a sludge management regime. The nutrient budgets were calculated based on the sources and sinks of nutrients in the ponds over a period of 49 d. The input sources of N and P were mainly shrimp feed, which accounted for more than 90%. Shrimp harvesting was the largest sink of N (37.5%), but not of P (18.3%). Almost 30.4% N and 16.9% P of input were not accounted for the measured losses. While the smallest proportion of N (18.9%) was retained in sludge, the largest amount of P was accumulated in sludge (53.2%). The farm was operated without water exchange, so ponds gained only 1.9% N and 4.2% P from water intake. The pond lost about 13.2% N and 11.6% P from discharge water. Production of 1 kg shrimp needed 84.9 g N and 26.1 g P from total input sources and discharged 47.3 g N and 16.0 g P to the environment. Environmental losses of nutrients were lower or intermediate, when the loads were expressed in both kg/ha/cycle and kg of N or P per ton of shrimp produced. Furthermore, the environmental impacts of aquaculture are controlled from the system.
